In the wake of the most powerful tsunami in recent history, survivors share harrowing accounts of grief and loss. The savage waves claimed the lives of Delisa Fitri’s mother and sister, and even crushed her leg. 20 years on, she reflects on her perilous journey to get back on her feet.
Renowned scientist Professor Nazli Ismail explains the miraculous survival of the Rahmatullah Mosque that withstood the tsunami’s wrath. Having spent much of his childhood in the mosque, he reflects on how the tsunami brought a new wave of development to his hometown.
The documentary also explores the global humanitarian response to the disaster which brought NGOs and militaries from different corners of the world to Aceh, including Singapore. It also documents the tireless efforts of local heroes like Susi Pudijastuti, who risked everything to deliver essential supplies to isolated communities and aid fishermen in need. A powerful testament to the human spirit in the face of disas

I remembered the late 2004 to early 2005 as a 6 years old elementary student. Every day I watched the news broadcast the situation in Aceh again and again and again, but I didn't understand the scale of this disaster until I grew up. In 2015 I joined the Indonesian Red Cross and some of my seniors were the volunteers that helped Aceh at the time. They told how the ambulance was shot because Aceh in the midst of conflict, they worked side-by-side with local volunteers who lost all of their families and still held strong. Now every time I watch documentaries or movies regarding Tsunami in Aceh, it always brings tears to my eyes
This is what I like about ASEAN. Every time we argue with each other, when it matters, our solidarity is strong
SEA is indeed a very warm place both the community and the weather.
At that time people didn't even know what tsunami is, they assumed it was just normal flash flood. That's why in some videos you see people just walking casually even as the water is approaching
I am Acehnesse, still 13 at the time that happened.
And I know the name of that wave and how it works right after the earthquake and the shore line was retreating.
Ask my mum if you don't believe it ??, I was the one who warned them to search for high ground right after the quake.
This brings tears to my eyes. Thank you Singapore and all other countries for the compassion and supports during our most darkest times and when we needed the most.
When the 2004 Aceh Tsunami happened, I was working on a project in Timika, Papua. The conditions in Timika were also very chaotic due to the Religious War between Musli... and Christians in Ambon, Maluku (1999-2002). This caused Musli... fled to Makassar, and Christians fled to Timika. At Pomako Beach, I looked out to sea and wondered why Indonesia was so chaotic at that time. That motivated me to participate in rebuilding Indonesia until today.
We are lucky to live in a far better and far more stable time, Indonesia of today is not only stable, but also thriving, the largest economy in southeast asia, part of G20 and one of the largest economy in the world
Ameenn to this, not many of us even realized that we've came so far along, even if our path as a nation was bumpy but we eventually recovered in the right amount of time. We've also been one of the most progressive nations on earth because of this, it makes you appreciate the country even more. Long Live Indonesia???????? and thank you for your sincere contribution in getting this country on our feet again.
Eh we now in a economic spiral. And the faster the government and the general populace realise it. The faster we can fix it.
You just need to see how dire the situation now

prayer for my teachers, my friends, my younger siblings, and the alumni of Elementary School 7 Banda Aceh, Junior High School 1 Banda Aceh, and Senior High School 1 Banda Aceh who became victims of the earthquake and tsunami 20 years ago.
United States can't even come close to pulling this off. After Katrina, people were left on roof tops for days without food and water. North Carolina STILL hasn't received the helps it needs after Helene. Kudos to all these people who helped after this devastation.

Just be grateful to those who are alive today, be grateful for your life with people you love around you. Be grateful you weren't there, or at least you probably survived this tsunami. It was last 2 decades' Christmas, the news that shocked not only Indonesia, but the entire world. I remember the pain watching the news in Indonesia back then, all streets and rivers covered with not only debris, but dead bodies, a scene similar in the Walking Dead.
Thanks to all who have helped us when we were in that big trouble, your services will never be forgotten, may Allah repay all the good of my beloved brothers... and may we all remain aware that humanity is real, and hostility only damages us... Spread love, not hate.
What baffles me today is how the only building that was left intact during that day was a mosque, while all of the government buildings were to be wiped clean.
The scientist did explain, the design and structure of how the mosque was built helped.
Also the big statues and Temples and basicly any building build with strong materials like concrete and which were not build losely on the sand stood strong. Even tall concrete hotels stayed standing. It's the material used and how those buildings were build stronger what saved them, nothing to do with this or that religion.
I was 10 and in Jakarta watching the most traumatic event through tv. I still remember how confused, sad, hurtful feeling of mine as a 10 year old boy. Watching this 20 years after, felt so unreal that the people of Aceh and the surroundings have had to go through such event. Again, after 20 years, I feel sorry for their lost of their loved ones. Even 100 year later, the traumatic feelings will never heal but one thing we should always remember and be thankful for is how the world reacted to this. People from around the world gathered in Aceh, leaving behind their family, to give their support for the people of Aceh. Me as an Indonesian, wanted to say thank you even though I know that a thank you will never be enough to repay the kindness??
"One morning at a boarding house in Jakarta in 2004, where we usually had breakfast together with our college friends, we were suddenly shocked by the news, and none of us could hold back our tears. A few days later, we gathered funds, and some of us arranged permission to volunteer on behalf of our university, Trisakti University. We were deployed on a Hercules aircraft to Medan and then traveled by land to Aceh, where the situation was far worse than the largest battlefield imaginable. Hopefully, this tragedy will never happen again and will foster humanity while eliminating hatred among us."

My Dad with his team was sent H+10 days from Dept.Public Worker to estimate the damage and conducting assesment for Aceh recovery, he stunned for 30 minute after landing from helicopter, riding truck with bodybags, when he came home to Jakarta he tell the story to me for two days.

Not only aceh indonesia, even langkawi malaysia and phuket thailand also face same disaster, So many film or movies shows about thailand.
Yes, most media are focusing too much on the situation in Thailand even in documentaries, to the point of ignoring the worst affected areas.
Yeah, I remember it when I was in primary school. At that time, we don't know Tsunami term. After that, we know that is tsunami and how deadly is.
Now, Indonesia try to improve and strengthen about tsunami disaster risk reduction in every tsunami hazard areas
So, it's a 1500 years cycle. That's actually quite often even by the age of homo sapiens species.
Not really. There's another documentary that speaks more about the frequency of the tsunami on that particular plate in the Indian Ocean, from the studies in that same cave. The cave itself is situated vertically by the sea hence why it's unaffected. The dark line shows the bat droppings while the bigger lighter line shows the sediments that were brought in by the tsunami into the cave. The closest cycle was between 2,500 years and it had happened 4 times in the row, which were also the newest cycles. The old ones ranged between 4,500 years to 7,000 years with 2,500 years sometimes in between. The 17th century document probably recorded the last event that had happened 2,500 years ago, as between the 14th to 18th century, there was no record of any tsunamis (except one that was generated by Mt Krakatoa) by any traders and colonial powers of that time that were in that region (Spain, Portuguese, British or Dutch).
However there were traces of ancient civilization on the West coast of Peninsula Malaya that were once a center for global trade of iron and wrought iron in 788 BC. Remains of port and ships were also found at the site. The collapse of that ancient civilization could be attributed to the last devastating tsunami that had happened around 2,500 years ago, which corresponds to the sediments layer found in that cave. This area was also hit by the 2004 event as it directly faced the Andaman Sea.
The fact is, at that time there is internal conflict between Indonesia government and people in Aceh who want to be free country. But the tsunami came, and whatever happens between them (Indonesia soldiers and aceh people). They reach up together, save many life they can. And fighting together at the darkest time.
My best friend named Brian is one of the rescue volunteer, he die after because of the virus from the corpses. I remember he told me that he will end up dead if he goes to that place, it seems nothing and funny at the moment. I even laugh at him, I didn't realize it's actually real talk. To this day, i've still thinking about how stupid i am to even dare laugh at him.
It still traumatized for me i was a kid eventho i live far away from Banda Aceh but i live in Aceh that time it's chaos anywhere around Aceh all people worries, after the tsunami in the midnight i heard people shout "TSUNAMI TSUNAMI TSUNAMI" and soooo loud noices, we woke up from the sleep, we ran but we didn't know where we should go and back then we didn't enough educated about this things. I ran as i can and so confused, we tried to find the highest place at the end we went to the second floor a mosque and there's full of people in the mosque all people in worries. We thought it's the second tsunami will finished all over Aceh. But it wasn't it just earthquake(but it was strongest earthquake i ever felt and happend many times) and we found out the thief use it to make peoples outta our house and steal our stuff. It was so traumatized for me personally. I can imagine how others in Banda Aceh and around. After that my days full of scared I can't heard loud noises, can heard people shout for many years i've got anxiety straight away if i heard it. I'm blessed i can moved from that abit and i hope everyone can heal from that trauma ?????
Thank you to the international community, neighboring and friendly countries for your assistance and humanitarian solidarity. Prime Minister of Singapore, SFA and the people of Singapore and our former Minister Ibu Susi and Susi Air who have acted quickly in response to the disaster. Thank you.
